NIBRT Publish Annual Report 2024

Dublin, Ireland,11 February 2025 –  The National Institute for Bioprocessing Research and Training (NIBRT) today published its Annual Report for 2024, highlighting a year of growth across its training and research activities while supporting the robust growth of Ireland’s biopharma sector.

Overall revenues at NIBRT grew 4% year on year. NIBRT’s training and education services delivered nearly 30,000 learning days to over 4,500 trainees across 2024 including:

  • 1,279 people trained through various academic programmes in partnership with universities across Ireland.
  • 700 people trained through the Government of Ireland’s reskilling programme Springboard+.
  • Over 2,300 biopharma facility staff trained directly via customised courses developed in partnership with the companies.
  • Online training delivered through the NIBRT Online Academy (NOA) platform to over 7,800 users in over 93 countries.

NIBRT’s Global Partnership programme continued to grow impressively with the addition of the Institut Pasteur de Dakar, NIBRT’s first training partner in Africa, and the formal launch of partner facilities in Houston, Vancouver and Maryland.

The NIBRT research team delivered highly impactful collaborative projects in partnership with many global and indigenous biopharma players in 2024. Some key highlights included:

  • €12.21M of active Research Ireland funding, including two Research Professorships, one Pathways Programme Award and a Frontiers for the Future Award.
  • 34 high impact publications, including a paper in Nature Communications
  • A record number of PhD students
  • Expansion of the team to include 12 Principal Investigators and two new Adjunct Principal Investigators.

The year also saw the opening of NIBRT’s Advanced Therapies extension by An Tánaiste, Micheál Martin. This new facility will enable NIBRT to better support the manufacturing of innovative medicines such as cell and gene therapies. In addition, NIBRT launched a new fill-finish line to further support the increasing numbers of drug product facilities being developed in Ireland.

Announcing the release of the Annual Report, NIBRT Chair Julie O’Neill remarked “I would like to acknowledge and thank the team at NIBRT for their hard work and many successes during 2024. All of these highlights demonstrate to me that NIBRT in 2024 continued to stride forward in building its international reputation for excellence in research and training while supporting the growth of the biopharma industry in Ireland”.

The Report also highlights key calls to action to ensure the biopharma sector can continue its impressive growth including:

  • A continued emphasis on talent development
  • Developing research activity of scale
  • Benchmarking against peer countries
  • Effective strategic planning amongst all key stakeholders
